ART++: /Carnal/ Forms
October 20 – November 28, 2003
Reception: October 23, 6:00 – 8:00 PMNEW YORK – Globe Institute Gallery is pleased to announce an upcoming exhibition of paintings by Constantin Gedal and Victor Zinuhov. The exhibition, titled as “ART++: /Carnal/ Forms,” will consist of figurative paintings, with distinctive metaphysical and surrealist cruxes.
The oil-on-canvas works by Victor Zinuhov represent uncanny aspects of the human body and the unconscious through the symbolist and surrealist vocabulary of the twentieth century and its precedents, reminiscing aspects of such masters as Bosch, Dalí, Ernst and others. The paintings of Zinuhov are dense in the artist’s rendition of multi-layered and multi-faceted internal and external figures through superb modeling techniques and forms that monumentalize the imaginary. Zinuhov’s psychedelic, bodily and volumetric figures are contrasted with flat grounds in a few paintings, while others transport the viewer into infinite space. These works are interplays of figuration, abstraction, the esoteric, Western and the non-Western pictorial representations of the modern and postmodern social being. While bodily, carnal and sexually provocative in their contents, they remain masterly in their techniques.
Pensive and detached male and female images appear within metaphysical spatial domains in Constantine Gedal’s oil-on-canvas paintings. Although representational as figures and grounds, their relations are somewhat irrational—figures are suspended or placed within closed and open spaces. Despite the classical academic rigors of these paintings, they refer to such works as sculptures and lines in space; here is art at once about and beyond art. Gedal’s painterly modeling and tenebrism in rich tones of brown and blue return and add to the infinite paths paved by the Surrealists.
Both artists will be present during the reception.
